Drink with Conviction at London’s Prison-Themed Pop-Up Bar Alcotraz

Curious customers will the chance to see what life behind bars is like at new bar Alcotraz popping up on Brick Lane in east London from September 28th.

As you might have gathered from the name, the new bar is modelled on Alcatraz Penitentiary, San Francisco’s legendary prison.

Further details of the bar are closely guarded (pun intended) at the moment, but in a statement organisers promise an “experiential pop-up” that will “replicate the eerie atmosphere and mystery associated with prison life, offering a world of unique escapism.”

One thing we can be certain of is that alcoholic drinks will definitely not be considered contraband…

In a similar fashion to Dublin’sDrop Dead Twice, ‘convicts’, who will don orange jumpsuits, are encouraged to smuggle their own spirits past into the fake “jail,” where mixologists will custom craft cocktails based on the liquor they brought.

The concept is the brainchild of Sam Shearman, the founder of Inventive Productions, who said in a statement that the bar does not set out to “romanticize imprisonment but rather create an engaging experience for guests that gently opens the door to worlds only seen by most in fiction.”

Convicts to Alcotraz sign up to a sentence of 1 hour and 45 minutes and includes four cocktails for £30 per person.

The prison will open its doors on September 28th, with opening hours from Thursday to Saturday from 5-11pm, and will close December 17th.
