Alamos Malbec 2015 – Wine of the Week from O’Briens

In the late nineties and early noughties, many wine lovers proudly labeled themselves as ABC’s -Anything But Chardonnay- drinkers. Then, after the success of Oscar winner Sideways (2004) it became trendy, almost cool, to snub Merlot and after that, Pinot Grigio was public winenemy number 1.

When I recently read a what’s “in” and what’s “out” piece on wine trends, displayed in the style they use on fashion magazines and saw Malbec in the unfashionable side, I rolled my eyes at first. How could they! But then it made me think they had a point, there is a bit of a Malbec bubble out there with many generic examples making their way to shelves and wine lists. However, Malbec is far from being ubiquitous and its spicy richness is certainly not boring.

Alamos Malbec 2015 – Wine of the Week from O’BriensAlamos Malbec 2015 makes a strong argument about why Malbec deserves love: It is balanced, intense and generous, the kind of bottle that showcases the edge that high-altitude vineyards get in world famous Mendoza, Argentina’s wine region par excellence.

It is deep and dark in colour and in taste, with aromas and flavours of ripe blackberries, clove, cinnamon and a touch of leather -more new car than handbag- and cigar. A stroke of minerality distinguishes from its peers.

The tannins are on the strong side but well rounded, just what the wine needs to match its not shabby 13.5% ABV.

It will be an ideal bottle to bring to a BBQ or to enjoy with -guess what- an Argentinian asado. Not overly complex, everyone will enjoy it at a dinner party or Netflix marathon. Feeling like cooking? Pair it with grilled lamb chops, a homemade beef burger or a Port marinated steak.

Alamos Malbec 2015 is available at O’Briens Wine at €14.95.
