A Month of Wine Discovery – Febvreuary Returns

The month of ‘Febvreuary‘ is once upon us again and I for one am quite excited, as I look at the calendar of events and I’m thinking how many will I be able to attend without tiring out completely. Yes, it is predominantly trade events but they have also confirmed four fantastic consumer events. Some of the most illustrious names across the wine world will be flying in to showcase their quality wines. Marcelo Rematal 13th most influential winemaker from De Martino will be hosting a tasting whilst Dante Cecchini from Castello Banfi will be walking us through ‘The Tuscan Lifestyle’ tasting and award winning journalist and blogger Fiona Beckett will be hosting a series of food and wine masterclasses such as ‘wine and spice’.

Months like this are rare to have such a varied selection of events hosted by some of the leading people within the industry like Jan Konetski, sommelier for Restaurant Gordon Ramsey. This is one event that many in the industry are excited about. I love to attending these kind of events to hear successful people share their thought process and how they become inspired. Similarly with winemaker tastings you get a rare chance to walk through their range. You can also see through either vertical or range tastings their influences and how their wines evolve and grow whilst the winemaker shares his thought process and explains how these influences shape their wines.

Richard Halstead, co-founder and COO of Wine Intelligence UK will be giving a talk on wine world consumer trends which I am particularly looking forward to. Ireland is small country with only one vineyard, Lusca in County Dublin, so we like to explore the world with a glass of wine. With Richard sharing his knowledge we can see what may be new or what may becoming back.

Warre’s a quality driven port producer will be walking us through a vertical tasting of their much sought after Quinta da Cavadinha, going back as far as 1992. This will be special to see how the port has aged and developed from 1992 to 2012. They will also host a Warre’s tasting for the public in Gibneys in Malahide, so keep an eye out for this.

For consumers Febvre will be host four fantastic events such as tastings as well as dinners with some great winemakers. First off will be the infamous Dante Cecchini from Castello Banfi one of the leading producers of Brunello. As Febvre work with many hotels, restaurants and shops around the country they are taking some events on the road. They will be hosting the Castello Banfi dinner in Drury Buildings in Dublin and Artisan in Galway. Pioneering winemaker David Baverstock from South Australia who works for Herdade de Esporao winery in Portugal will be hosting a wine tasting dinner in the Asador, an evening not to be missed. There are a limited amount of tickets for all events including trade so make sure to book early.

Renowned winemakers Herve Robert from Delas Freres in the Rhone Valley and Chester Osborn from d’Arenberg in Australia will be guiding a live Skype tasting about ‘Rhône Style’. This should be particular interesting to taste and skype and see if modern technology really can open the world for winemakers to regularly hosting a tasting from home and showcase their wines to both the trade and the public.

This is not a month to be missed and if you must grab a bottle or two and invite a friend or two and host your own mini tasting. All details can be found on the Febvre website. Most of the consumer events can be booked through the venue themselves. Whatever you do enjoy and savor the month of ‘Febvreuary’.
