Pocket Friendly Wines for You to Enjoy This New Year
Throughout the festive season, I enjoyed splashing out on some great wine and luxury gifts for myself, family and friends. I don’t know about you but come January I find I am totally broke! I tend to tighten the purse strings for a few weeks and search for some every day well-priced wines.
Wine doesn’t need to be a spectacular experience all the time. However, if I do pop a cork or twist the screwcap, I want to enjoy the wine in my glass and hope it gives me some pleasure. Many people feel that they can only bag a bargain or buy inexpensive wine in large supermarkets, this is not the case. I have been on the hunt for ‘great value and great quality wines’ and I have found some in your local wine merchants.
Unfortunately, there aren’t as many good off licences as there used to be, many are struggling to survive with powerhouses selling wine and spirits below the price that it costs independents. FACT. I urge you to discover the closest wine specialist to you. I appreciate that for some, the first time you step foot in a decent wine shop it can be a bit of a daunting, overwhelming and even intimidating experience.
But I promise you won’t regret it. You have a far better chance of purchasing something that you will like. Most decent wine shops have passionate trained staff on hand to help you in choosing a good quality wine on any budget. Their reputation is at stake they want to assist you to explore new wines, lesser-known regions and not just choose a random bottle based on an attractive label, creative marketing or even potluck.
Ask for assistance, they won’t judge you, even if you only have ten euro to spend, they want to gain your trust and see you return as a regular customer.
Here are some of the super priced wines that I am recommending this month all found in your local off-licence.
1. Clos de Corten Sauvignon Blanc
A National Off-Licence Gold Star Winner, I can easily understand why. It is very exciting to see wines from lesser-known regions and countries reaching our shores. This is a Sauvignon Blanc from Moldova, it has aromas of ripe tropical fruit, on the palate we find a crisp dry wine with watermelon and pineapple fruit flavours, refreshing acidity and a decent length of finish. Enjoy on its own or with light fish, grilled chicken or salads
Approx. Price €10.00 – €11.00 – Available from; Higgins Clonskeagh; JC’s Swords; Martins Fairview; McHugh’s Kilbarrack; Morton’s Ranelagh; O’Donovan’s Cork, Shiel’s Malahide; Sipster & The Woodworker, Belfast; Swans Naas, Kildare; Vintry Rathgar; World Wide Wines Waterford; www.wineonline.ie
2. Boutinot The Long Little Dog Pays D’Oc Blanc
I have used this wine and the matching red at many family parties. On the label it says ‘Pays D’Oc’ meaning that the grapes have been picked throughout France in order to blend into this cracking little wine from the southern vineyards of France. A fruit forward wine with citrus notes and zesty acidity. It is certainly a crowd-pleasing style. This easy drinking wine can be enjoyed as an aperitif, with fish or chicken dinners.
Approx. Price €10.00 – €11.00 – Available from; C&T Marino, Jus de Vine, Lilac Wines, Mc Hugh’s Kilbarrack Sweeney’s.
3. Segredos de Sao Miguel Tinto
This is an impressive wine that exceeds most people’s expectations. Aromas of red and black fruits of the forest lead onto a similar palate with soft, smooth, silky tannins. A Portuguese red wine that over-delivers on price. This will go down well with tapas, tomato-based pasta, lamb and other grilled meats. As you can see by the vast list of stockists’ I am not the only one who thinks this is a super wine.
‘Segredos is a cracking bottle of wine, so good I chose it for my own wedding’ Padraig Sweeney, Lilac Wines
Approx. Price €12.00 – Available from; Baggot Street Wines, Bradys, Shankill, Coachouse, Ballinteer, D Six, Donnybrook Fair Outlets, Fallon & Byrne, Foley Wines, Fresh Outlets, Green Man Wines, Jus De Vine Portmarnock, La Touche Wines, Lilac Wines, Listons, Mac Guinness Wines, Dundalk, Martins, Fairview, Matson’s Outlets, Cork, Morton’s Ranelagh, Nectar, Sandyford, The Malt House Trim, The Wine Shop, Perrystown, The Wine Well, Dunboyne, Whelehan’s Wine.
4. Boutinot The Long Little Dog Pays D’oc Rouge
This is a fruity, warming and aromatic wine on the nose. Little Long Dog red is plump with a luscious texture and subtle twist of spice on the finish. It is a fruit-driven style brimming with blackberry flavours, a perfect pairing for a platter of antipasto or tomato and meat-based pasta dishes. Or equally, enjoy this delicious red on its’ own! P.S. It’s vegan!
Approx. Price €10.00 – Available from; C&T Marino, Jus de Vine, Lilac Wines, Mc Hugh’s Kilbarrack Sweeney’s.
I hope you get to sample some of these wine suggestions. I would love to hear what little gems you have found in your local wine merchants.
