1916 Easter Rising Themed Family Picnic at The Ardilaun Hotel

This Easter Monday, the 28th of March, as part of the Galway Food Festival, The Ardilaun Hotel will celebrate their intrinsic link to Boland’s Family Biscuits, and their bakery Mill, the building seized by Eamonn de Valera as the scene of the 1916 Easter Rising Rebellion. The famous Boland’s family dynasty lived in the historic Glenarde House on the grounds of Taylors Hill until 1962 when the property was acquired by the Ryan family and its transition into the Ardilaun Hotel commenced.

The Ardilaun invites families and friends to gather and celebrate their connection to the key historic moment when Irish nationalism was revolutionised on Easter Monday 1916. A special 1916 Fancy Dress Family Themed Picnic will be held on the stunning surroundings of the Ardilaun Gardens on the hotel grounds, with lots of fun games from the 1916 era such as hide and seek, hopscotch, skipping, marbles and much more, with traditional Irish entertainment promised on this special day of reliving Galway and Ireland’s history over the last 100 years inclusive of a dedicated Ardilaun Hotel Biscuit Factory for the day.

The picnic will be held from 2.00pm-4.30pm so families can bring their own blankets, and it promises to be a party to remember. Pre-booking is essential and tickets are priced at €20 for adults and €10 for children and fun is guaranteed for all the family!

Picnickers will enjoy a selection of Galway’s finest artisan produce including an array of delicious home-made cordials, lemonades and freshly baked biscuits and sumptuous sweet treats and tasty delights by the Ardilaun’s executive head chef David O’Donnell. David and his culinary team will present a selection of indulgent baked treats using the finest local artisan produce.

The legacy of Ireland’s biscuit dynasty, the Boland family, famous for their custard creams, cream crackers and bourbon creams, still produced in Ireland by Jacobs will also be celebrated on the day at the Ardilaun’s pop up Biscuit Factory!

Children are encouraged to get creative with designing and customising their own biscuits, and the winner of the best creation will be awarded a special prize! Picnic-goers are encouraged to relive the fashion of this historic era, and those who don their 1916 themed costumes will be in with a chance of scooping the award for best dressed guest! Fun is guaranteed for all the family, and there will be an array of exciting games to choose from!

Friends and family are invited to step back in time on Easter Monday to honour the Ardilaun Hotel’s rich cultural heritage, and connection to the historic events of Ireland’s 1916 Easter Rising. There are special accommodation family packages to include picnic, entertainment, accommodation and full Irish breakfast for a family of four from €348 in total including free entry to the Koala kids club during their stay, full details online.
